Hunter Valley Travel Guide 2026

Everything you need to know about visiting the Hunter Valley — Australia's oldest wine region. From world-class wineries and award-winning restaurants to cafes, accommodation, things to do and how to get around. Updated for 2026.

Loop Tours has been driving guests through the Hunter Valley for years. This is everything we know — distilled into one guide.

01

About the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region, located just two hours north of Sydney in New South Wales. Centred around the towns of Pokolbin, Cessnock, Lovedale, Nulkaba and Broke, the region is home to over 150 wineries, dozens of award-winning restaurants and some of Australia's most celebrated cellar doors.

The Hunter Valley is best known for its Hunter Semillon — one of Australia's most distinctive white wine styles — and its earthy, complex Shiraz. But beyond wine, the region has evolved into one of NSW's premier food and tourism destinations, with world-class dining, artisan cheese, chocolate, distilleries, hot air balloons, spa retreats and stunning countryside.

The main areas to explore are Pokolbin (the heart of wine country), Lovedale (quieter, boutique), Cessnock (the gateway town), Broke (further west, stunning scenery) and Mount View (elevated views, French-inspired dining at Bistro Molines).

Getting Around the Hunter Valley

This is the most important thing to plan before your trip. The Hunter Valley covers a large area — wineries are spread across Pokolbin, Lovedale, Broke and Mount View, often 10–30 minutes apart by car. Roads are rural, sometimes winding, and drink-driving laws are strictly enforced in Australia.

Your three main options are:

1. Private Wine Tour Driver — Recommended

The best way to experience the Hunter Valley. A private driver picks you up from your accommodation, takes you to the wineries of your choice at your own pace, and returns you safely at the end of the day. No designated driver, no taxis, no missed tastings. Groups of up to 11 guests.

2. Hire a Car

Available from Cessnock and Newcastle. Works well if you have a designated non-drinking driver in your group. Be aware that roads around Pokolbin and Lovedale are rural with limited signage.

3. Cycling

E-bikes are available for hire in Pokolbin. Works best for the inner Pokolbin wine trail. Not suitable for Lovedale or Broke which are further away.

Loop Tours tip: Book a private driver and leave the logistics to us. Classic wine tours from $549, Premium from $649 (includes dinner transfer), Ultimate from $749 (includes 2 dinner transfers). Groups up to 11.

Insider Tips from Loop Tours

🗓️

Book everything in advance

Top restaurants like Muse and Bistro Molines fill weeks ahead on weekends. Cellar door tastings at Brokenwood and Audrey Wilkinson also book out. Don't leave it to the day.

🍷

Quality over quantity

Don't try to visit 10 wineries in one day. 4–6 wineries gives you enough time to really enjoy each tasting and soak in the atmosphere. Our drivers will help you plan the perfect itinerary.

💧

Drink water between tastings

The Hunter Valley sun is strong, especially in summer. Stay hydrated, eat well and pace yourself. Your driver will have water on board.

🧀

Don't skip the food

The Hunter Valley food scene is as good as the wine. Build a long lunch into your itinerary — whether it's Bistro Molines, Circa 1876 or a cheese platter at the Cheese Factory.

🎯

Explore beyond Pokolbin

Most visitors only see the main Pokolbin strip. Ask your Loop Tours driver to take you to Lovedale, Broke or Mount View — some of the best wineries and restaurants are off the main trail.

🌙

Book a dinner transfer for the evening

Don't let the day end at 5pm. Book a Loop Tours dinner transfer from $150 return and continue the evening at Muse, Bistro Molines or Circa 1876. Return whenever you're ready — just text your driver.
